ACCREDITATION

          What does "accreditation" mean?

Accreditation means the school, college or university has chosen to meet certain standards reflecting a sound educational program which has been reviewed by a private accrediting agency.  The US Department of Education does not accredit schools, colleges or universities.

"In order to insure a basic level of quality, the practice of accreditation arose in the United States as a means of conducting non-governmental, peer evaluation.  Private educational associations of regional or national scope have adopted criteria reflecting the qualities of a sound educational program and have developed procedures for evaluating institutions or programs to determine whether or not they are operating at basic levels of quality."  (US Department of Education website.)

The quality or content of the curriculum offered is not reviewed in the accrediting process.  A review of the course syllbi and competencies, plus faculty accomplishments and credentials is a guiding criteria to curriculum quality.

There is no mandate by federal law for a school, college or university to be accredited…it is a voluntary process.  Breyer State University has been awarded accreditation approval by the Central States Consortium of Colleges and Schools (CSCCS).  (BSU has been approved for a new 5-year accreditation through 2012.)

Breyer State University has chosen not to seek federal funding or federal grants, therefore has elected not be seek accreditation from any agency approved by the US Dept. of Education in order to qualify for federal monies.

Is a degree from a school accredited by CSCCS considered "legal."

The CSCCS only confers accreditation upon schools and colleges that are legal entities in the continental United States.  Accreditation is not considered for any institution that might be operating outside the legal standards or operating as a diploma mill.  To see a copy of the standards used by CSCCS to accredit institutions of secondary education, please visit the web site and click on "view standards."

• Will employers accept my degree?

Each employer has its prerogative as to what types of educational credentials it will or will not accept.  Employers have the basic right to define qualification for a job.  If you have concerns about a particular employer and a specific job, confer with the employer about this issue.

• Will my degree credits transfer to another institution?

Many colleges and universities automatically articulate with Breyer State University; the transfer of specific credits, however, is always open to review by the accepting institution generally based on how well the curriculum from one university matches the curriculum of another.   Again, if you have concerns about credit transfers, check with the university under consideration.
